Douchebag Decree: Misog-edgy – Celebrating iconic objectifier Robert Williams

Art and Design post by Kjerstin Johnson, November 6, 2009 - 2:08am; tagged art, comics, Douchebag Decree, misogyny, objectification, Robert Williams, underground comics, Violence Against Women.

Urban contemporary art magazine Juxtapoz's November issue is the Robert Williams issue, a big-hitter in the underground comics scene and the magazine's founder. Oh, and he drives feminists up the wall with the way his artwork objectifies women. *NSFW and possibly triggering images after the break.*

Passivity in domesticity: Is clipart the new female nude?

Art and Design post by Kjerstin Johnson, September 4, 2009 - 10:38pm; tagged art, art history, domesticity, gender, gender roles, John Berger, kitchen, male gaze, objectification, the female nude, women in the kitchen.

Artist Martha Rosler's ongoing interest on the depiction of women in domestic sphere led her to collect internet images of women in the kitchen for her installment of Art Fag City's IMG MGMT. Rosler did a web search of women alone in the kitchen, compiling dozens of photographs and grouping them by theme (historical, pregnant, happy/submissive, "ethnic," etc), and includes an essay explaining the connection between women, domesticity, and submissiveness in images.

Art and Design post by Briar Levit, August 25, 2009 - 12:50am; tagged art, flickr, photography, Rosie the Riveter, World War 2.

Just thought I'd give a heads up to the flickr blog's post of interpretations of the famous Rosie the Riveter poster. They also include links to pictures of the real women of the era too. Enjoy!

"Men at their Most Masculine" fails to capture what it's after

Art and Design post by Kjerstin Johnson, August 14, 2009 - 3:53pm; tagged art, Chad States, femininity, gender identity, masculinity, MEN, NSFW, photography.
masc4.jpg
"Men at Their Most Masculine" was a photography project Chad States began by posting "Are you masculine?" on Craigslist in search of folks who identify as masculine and why. The intention was to showcase a range of people who identified as masculine and photograph them on their own terms. However, States' interview in The Morning News reveals some contradictions behind his work.

sm[art]: Beth Van Hoesen's Prints and Drawings

Art and Design post by Annalee Schafranek, July 15, 2009 - 7:53pm; tagged art, Beth Van Hoesen, female artists, Portland Art Museum.

As mentioned in this past Popaganda, I visited the Portland Art Museum this past weekend and completely fell in love with the detailed and often quirky work of Beth Van Hoesen. From red afros to tattooed men to skunks named Fleur, Van Hoesen's work is as whimsically unique as it is grounded in reality.
