Push Gets a Distributor and Support from Oprah

Movies post by Tammy Oler on February 3, 2009 - 11:35am; tagged Lee Daniels, Oprah Winfrey, push, Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, sapphire, Sundance, Tyler Perry.
Quick update: Sundance winner Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire has landed a distributor! News broke yesterday that Lionsgate has acquired North American rights to the film. What's more, both Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are also backing Push, which means that director Lee Daniels may actually be able to get this film in front of commercial audiences after all. Whew!

The Super Bowl Post

Sports post by La Macha on February 2, 2009 - 3:04pm; tagged advertising, commercials, media sexism, the super bowl.

So, rather than watch the Super Bowl, I ate food and slept. In spite of my attempts to avoid the whole damn mess, however, I still wound up being forced to deal with the requisite oohs and aaaahs over the commercials. I'm not a big fan of commercials period--but Super Bowl ads are often especially problematic to me because they are well aware that they are appealing to the most base instinct of the macho drunk male getting it on with his macho drunk male friends (I read somewhere that more partner abuse happens during Super Bowl than any other time of the year).

Marketing He's Just Not That Into You as a Film that Men Can Get Into

Movies post by Tammy Oler on February 1, 2009 - 1:43pm; tagged chick flick, chick flicks, he's just not that into you, rom-com, romantic comedies, romantic comedy.

He's Just Not That Into YouA week prior to the film's release, the marketing team for He's Just Not That Into You has released a video of three of film's male stars - Justin Long, Bradley Cooper, and Kevin Connolly - trying to persuade men to see the film. The reason they think men might actually like the film? Because, they claim, He's Just Not That Into You avoids the top 10 cliches of chick flicks.

Video and more after the jump!

Is Lil' Mama Leaving the Game? Female Rappers as an Endangered Species

Love / Shove post by Ehren Gresehover on February 1, 2009 - 12:58pm; tagged I'm a Diva, Lil' Mama, rap.
This past week, a new track from the 19 year-old Brooklyn vocalist with the cringe-inducing nickname Lil' Mama leaked to the internet, entitled "I'm a Diva" (which is not a remix of the Beyonce track of the same name), which will presumably end up on her as yet untitled sophomore release. If you had never heard anything from her before, very little about this track, with its slick production and lyrics about conspicuous consumption, will surprise you. What is surprising (and a little disappointing) is that Lil' Mama built her reputation as a rapper, and should this song prove to be representative of where her career is headed, it seems that she might be abandoning hip-hop in favor of pop stardom. Full story after the jump.

The Box's Crush of the Week: Kirsten Gum

TV post by Juliana Tringali on January 30, 2009 - 6:39pm; tagged Kirsten Gum, Travel Channel, Treasure Hunter: Kirsten Gum.

Kirsten Gum

This week the box has a good old fashioned feminist crush on Kirsten Gum, the Travel Channel’s Treasure Hunter. There’s no stretch of the imagination required to understand her appeal: She travels the world searching for treasure, often braving intense elements and physical challenges to get to it. Watching her accomplish her goals is inspiring, but Gum’s sense of humor and winning attitude makes it fun, too.

Wedding March of the Penguins

Love / Shove post by Kelsey Wallace on January 30, 2009 - 3:07pm; tagged China, cuteness, gay marriage, penguins.

Warning: The following blog post is a bit too cute for words, but it's Friday and we figured maybe you could use it.

Same-sex marriage may still be unacceptable for us humans, but apparently at a zoo in China it's A-OK for gay penguins.

That's right, two male penguins at the Polarland Park in NE China have grown so close as of late that they were rewarded with a formal wedding ceremony. More insane cuteness (and weirdness) after the jump!

American Apparel Answers Back

Love / Shove post by Annalee Schafranek on January 30, 2009 - 3:01pm; tagged advertising, American Apparel, domestic violence.

I'm the type of person who likes to think of themselves as flying under the radar. So you can imagine my surprise when I woke up yesterday to find an email from American Apparel in reference to my blog post from Wednesday.

I'll include the email and my thoughts, after the jump.

The Feminization of Medicine

Science post by Lisa Factora-Bo... on January 30, 2009 - 8:30am; tagged feminism, Gender Gap, health, Healthcare, medicine.
A visit to two doctors - one female, one male - stirs up some interesting research on how women are changing the face of medicine.  Thank goodness.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch.

Love / Shove post by Kelsey Wallace on January 29, 2009 - 5:09pm; tagged funny, Joe Lo Truglio, Kerry Kinney-Silver, popcorn balls, The State.
For all of us fans of the The State out here in cyberspace (and I know I'm not the only one who is jonesing to make a "dip my balls in it" joke right now), the show's cancellation left a hole in our little hearts that not even Reno 911! has been able to fill. But don't worry, State veteran (and the show's solo woman star) Kerry Kenney-Silver has a new web-based television show that is all about filling your holes: Dame Delilah's Fantasy Ranch and Gift Shoppe.
