(Re)Thinking Walking: A Collaboration

Sports post by La Macha on January 26, 2009 - 5:18pm; tagged exercise, movement, relationship to exercise, walking, women of color.

My really good friend and fellow Chicana blogger, brownfemipower, is hosting a collaboration at her blog, Flip Flopping Joy, with fellow amazing media maker, Jess Hoffman (of make/shift fame).

Their collaboration is called (Re)Thinking Walking and centers ways that we can build new worlds through the process of purposeful walking.

Indoors, the mood was red-hot with crowds chanting slogans against Israel and supporting Hamas.

Why Every Guy Should Buy Their Girlfriend Wii Fit and Feminist Subversion?

Sports post by La Macha on January 2, 2009 - 11:57am; tagged feminist responses, sexism, Vlogging, wii fit, youtube.

I've been really surprised to find the extent that the vloggers of the world have embraced Wii Fit as a subject of discussion. The topics range anywhere from how much Wii Fit sucks, to simple instructions, to why men should buy their girlfriends Wii Fit. Guess which topic gets the most attention?

From a very limited google search that I conducted (I mean *very* limited) it appears that the following video began a craze of random videos of boyfriends/partners recording girlfriends rotating their hips while wearing underwear.

The Wii Fit and Healthy Skeptism

Sports post by La Macha on December 23, 2008 - 2:05pm; tagged exercise, fat acceptance, gaming, health, wii fit.

One of the biggest gifts this year in the arena of 'sports/exercise' is the Wii Fit. It is billed as a game and an exercise space, only better, and it's virtually impossible to find. You can do everything from yoga to table balancing and apparently so many people are into it, a new affliction has been named for it (the Wii Knee:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/3854172/Doctors-fear-a-Wii-knee-epidemic.html).

Here is a clip of Wii Fit in its idealized form:

Supporting Movement Friday

Sports post by La Macha on December 12, 2008 - 11:41am; tagged accessibility, sports.

Because it's Friday and I'm so sure none of us want to get all deep and "think-y" on a Friday--I'm gonna declare today "Support Movement Friday," which basically boils down to, I'm going to scour the internets for the coolest video/pics of women 'doing movement' and post it here. You are then going to ooh and ahh over the amazing fantastic beauty that is women moving--and then we will talk together to find ways to support ALL women in "movement."

Sex Positive and Hyper Sexualization in Sports: Is there a way to negotiate?

Sports post by La Macha on December 10, 2008 - 11:29am; tagged sex positive, sexuality, sports.

One of the biggest issues for women athletes these days is the extreme hyper-sexualization many sports require women to participate in while competing at a highly advanced level. For example, car racer Danica Patrick has been very straightforward (and quite successful) about embracing her more 'feminine' side while letting her racing skills speak for themselves. 08_danica-patrick_09.jpg

Rethinking "sports"

Sports post by La Macha on December 8, 2008 - 3:38pm; tagged disability, sports, women of color.

One of the big reasons so many women make the choice to not participate in sports is because "sports" is defined as a thing that very specifically and consciously denies women a place in. For example, I was discussing Sean Avery with my partner earlier in the week and he expressed the belief that on the whole, hockey is one of the least sexist sports out there.

The Sean Avery Post (aka an introduction to sexism in sports)

Sports post by La Macha on December 5, 2008 - 12:22pm;

The breakdown: Sean Avery is a hockey player who is in a bit of trouble these days. He recently pulled the press together in the locker room right before a game and made the announcement,

"I'm just going to say one thing. I'm really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just wanted to comment on how, it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."

Introductions!

Sports post by La Macha on December 3, 2008 - 7:50pm; tagged introductions, sports, sports culture.

Hello! My name is La Macha, and I'll be guest blogging at Bitch for the next bit! Usually I post at Vivir Latino with the unrivaled mami blogger; Maegan "la Mamita Mala" Ortiz. I thank the amazing Debbie for allowing me this opportunity to post here!

While I'm at Bitch, I'll be blogging about sports related 'stuff.' Now, before you roll your eyes and skip over my posts, let me just say--there's a reason that my 'column' will be posted under Team Queer: Movement and Sports Through A Bent Lens. I know that there's a reason so many women don't like sports because on many levels, I am those women myself. So I will be spending a lot of time uncovering (and encouraging YOU to uncover for yourself) reasons that 'sports' in general are a major turn off to women.
