I am hoping that the B-sides blog won't become a weekly RIP to independent publications - but then again, maybe it will wake us all up, myself included, to the reality that independent media is becoming increasingly more difficult to produce and that we can create opportunites to do something about it, otherwise we'll wake up and it will all be gone. That all sounds fine and good to say and think about and then five minutes later we are all back to our green teas and talking about what happened on Lost last night.
And since this is the B-sides blog, I am going to make a shameless pitch for development/outreach intern applicants - what's more fun than helping Bitch stay in business by planning an art show/auction? By working with supporters/readers around the nation for our chapters and release parties? If you are a junkie for people, this is for you.

Even though the human, environmental and economic impact of Hurricane Katrina are all still deeply felt throughout the regions that were ravaged by the disaster, the ongoing personal and political tolls of Katrina have fallen away from the headlines and out of public debate. This is just one of many ways media have failed the American people their treatment of one of the worst natural disasters in the history of our country.
I awoke this morning to the news that the music magazine, No Depression, will cease publishing after its May/June issue. Citing many of the same reasons that other indie publications have closed their doors (check out the story in Lost/Found issue of Bitch: Paper Cuts: Saying RIP to some of the best DIY), ND will move to web only content after 13 years of print publishing.
Please go out and support these artists and MINT gallery. If you go, let us know how the show went since none of us Bitch staffers can make the journey from Portland (although we would like to be there).
Events are funny beasts - we spend so much time planning them - there is worry, stress, debating over whether there should be candles or whether the program should have the mission statement on the front page or inside back cover - and then when the big day comes they take on a life of their own and magically, everything works (or doesn't but that is another blog post). I just had to write about the auction we had last Saturday night - sm[art] *art show and silent auction to benefit Bitch, because this one worked!
