“May all beings be happy,” is a Buddhist incantation that has always moved me. Unfortunately, with his recent comments, recording artist Pharrell Williams seems to be saying,“I, as a wealthy male celebrity, am happy. The rest of you are on your own.”
It's almost summer around these parts, which means two parts mellow, sunny windows-down tunes and one part Summertime Sadness (thanks Lana). Our mix of new music out this month reflects that balance. We've got some wistful melancholia on here, some powerful ruminations on the gender binary, some thrashing riot grrrl, and a world premiere of some punky satire by alt-Americana singer Meghann Wright. Happy Summer, y'all!
This week's mixtape is a selection of artists playing the inaugural Stargayzer Festival this September 12-14 in Austin, TX. Stargayzer is a brand new, 3-day celebration of queer/LGBTQIA music and culture that will feature 100+ musicians, drag artists, comedians, and performers from all across North America.
Stargayzer invites music lovers of all orientations and expressions, from far and wide, to come hang out, camp, dance, and make magic with us under the starry Texas sky! If you want more info about the fest, or to check out the full lineup, you can do that by visiting the festival's Facebook page.
This is a mix of garage, pop & childhood fantasies for summer. It's a West Coast & lady-heavy mixtape that is curated by Party Boyz: a podcast, zine, and music empire founded by two women in Portland, Oregon. Git it girlz.
I've been having some lonely times recently and wanted a playlist to listen to while I fall asleep. That's what this mix is for—music to listen to in the dark. It's not a bunch of tearjerker breakup songs, though, who needs that when you're already lonely? Instead, I've been getting into this band Elephant and they have the most hilarious official description for their genre: "Nocturnal Lo-Fi Bedroom Dreamy Beach Pop." YES. Nailed it. That's what I want: An hour-and-a-half of noctural, lo-fi, bedroom, dreamy, beach pop tunes.
So this mix includes Elephant as well as brand-new tracks from Mirah, Bonsai, Woman's Hour, and Lykke Li. Hope you like it.
My friends were shouting this week about how Fleetwood Mac is back on tour (!!!) and all the excitement prompted me to buy thesecond Fleetwood Mac covers album that I have ever purchased. Some people might think two Fleetwood Mac covers albums might be excessive for one music library that also includes numerous actual Fleetwood Mac albums. Those people are wrong.
Here's a playlist of two Fleetwood Mac songs sandwiching 11 savory Fleetwood Mac covers. Enjoy!
