Top 10 Reasons: You Deserve Comics That Highlight Women Who Have Made Critical Contributions to Society.

Bitch HQ post by Kristin Rogers Brown on November 28, 2012 - 1:07pm; tagged 10 reasons, comics, donate, illustration, Ladydrawers, subscribe.

You deserve comics that highlight women who have made critical contributions to society.

We all deserve history that comes alive. The best stories, to me, are the ones with weird and sometimes awkward details that we can relate to. Illustration in general also makes complex issues and stories easier to digest. It's hard to be interested in stories when you don't see yourself in them, and hard to imagine yourself in a creative field when you don't see room for yourself in it.

I believe strongly that this is work worth making. (Why, you ask? Read more, complete with comics! After the jump...)

New Totes & Tees at BitchMart!

Bitch HQ post by Ashley McAllister on November 26, 2012 - 12:55pm; tagged BitchMart.
Photo of four t-shirts folded and sitting on top of each other. Black tee shows an imprint of a chicken knitting with a computer and several balls of yarn sitting around them. Olive green tee also shows the knittin' chicken. Blue tee shows a woman with a beehive hairdo sitting on a stool knitting with a toddler next to her. They're surrounded by little teacups, candles, a typewriter, and assorted knick-knacks. A brown tee shows that same illustration.

Just in time for the holidays, we've added a few new totes and tees to BitchMart! Taking advantage of 20% off Bitch subscriptions today? Add a tote or tee (or both!) to your shopping cart—get a head start on shopping for your friends while supporting independent feminist media.

"An Annual Drawing Party of Racialized Queer Celebration": Talking Calendars with Elisha Lim

Bitch HQ post by Ashley McAllister on November 21, 2012 - 12:02pm; tagged BitchMart.
Image of the The Comfort of Queer Family Wisdom 2013 Wall CalendarElisha Lim, the illustrator behind the graphic series 100 Butches, has been illustrating beautiful and powerful wall calendars for the past few years. Their Sissy Calendar featured illustrations of people who identify as, celebrate and challenge the word "sissy". This year's calendar, The Comfort of Queer Family Wisdom Calendar, features illustrations of queer writers, artists, and organizers alongside words from Elisha on combating isolation by picking up queer and anti-racist books, organizing, and having conversations with friends. Both calendars are available at BitchMart! Elisha, who is a frequent Bitch contributor, was kind enough to answer a few questions about their calendars, the people featured in them, and what they're up to next.

10 Reasons to Support Bitch Media: We're Showcasing a New Generation of Feminist Writers and Critics

One of the things that we feel strongly about at Bitch, and always have, is that there's no one monolithic feminism, but many feminisms, and even more voices that speak to that variety. And it's been gratifying, eye-opening, and thrilling to work with and publish so many of these voices over the past 17 years.

On Our Radar: Special Halloween Edition!

Bitch HQ post by Emilly Prado on October 31, 2012 - 2:04pm; tagged halloween, horror films, links, On Our Radar, Zombies.

We hope you're enjoying this Halloween with lots of candy, costumes, and fun! Here's a special On Our Radar round-up of links we love around the web, including zombie history, horror-film heroiens, and a reminder to not be a total racist!
  • Doreen Oliver shares her story about her son wanting to be a princess for Halloween, and how the white-washed princess costumes gave her pause. [The New York Times]
  • Speaking of the dead, you can always pay your respects by visiting the grave sites of some of America's most famous writers. Here's a run-down of their final resting places.  [The Atlantic]
  • Scary flicks are a must on this spooky holiday, but don't be fooled by all of the misrepresented and stigmatized depictions of women with mental illness often found in horror films. Here's a read to make you think twice before you judge that "crazy bitch." [Bitch Flicks]
  • Here's a fabulous list of some of the most badass (and overlooked) horror film heroines of all time. But watch out! They might bite. [The Hairpin]
  • People can't seem to get enough of zombies these days. Ever wondered where their story originated? Amy Wilentz lays it out. [The New York Times]
  • Don't be racist, don't be racist, don't be racist! Kelsey shared a good run-down last week, but here is another eloquent take on how to not be racist for Halloween. [Tiger Beatdown]
  • What's creepier than the creepiest horror film you've ever seen? When they're real! Here's a list of scary movies based on true stories. [Flavorwire]
  • UTNE is posting some of their best posts on contemporary witchcraft and feminst spirituality—here's one of them. [UTNE Reader]
  • And finally, Sociological Images has rounded up their Halloween-themed posts, that range from the good (women laughing with salad!), the bad ("Anna Rexia"), and the ugly (did we mention that people are really racist on Halloween?) [Sociological Images]

So what are you costumed in for the holiday? Read anyting good? Share in the comments section below!
