On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Katie Presley on December 10, 2010 - 4:02pm; tagged links, On Our Radar, roundup.

It's Friday, which means it's time for a look back at what blipped onto our radar here at Bitch HQ this week!

  • Amanda Hess posted a take-down of the New York Times' latest fashion trend: transexuals!
  • Sady Doyle at The Awl wrote about feminism, pop culture, and Aliens. Needless to say, it caught our attention in all the best ways.
  • It's "My Little Pony Week" on the Ms. blog, and yesterday this post by Kathleen Richter called out homophobic and racist messages being sent via Pony Express (don't blame her for that joke. That was all me.).
  • Slate published a piece by Connie Schultz, a fellow political spouse, in memoriam of Elizabeth Edwards.
  • In being interviewed by Barbara Walters this week, Oprah Winfrey cried when asked about her relationship with her best friend, Gayle King. BUST wants to know: Why the tears, Oprah?
  • TED (Technology, Education, Design) launched its first TEDWomen conference this week in Washington, D.C. Read about the TED Fellows chosen to attend, watch videos, read transcripts, and join the discussion here.
  • And here's a review of the TEDWomen Conference by Carla Thompson at Sharp Skirts. Says Carla, "I think I was just privy to one of the most fascinating and inspiring weeks of the year. And I think an opportunity was missed to blow the conversation out of the water around women in business and women in life."

Bitch in a Box: Feminist Gifts for Teen Girls

Bitch HQ post by Ashley McAllister on December 3, 2010 - 3:35pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, feminist gifts, gift guide.
Picking out gifts for teenage girls is hard work. Especially when you want to pick out the gift that will dispel the doubts and insecurities that so often come with being a teenage girl. While there might not be one magic present that will turn your teenage sister or niece into an overnight feminist, there are a whole lot of gifts that will get the ball rolling. I've rounded up a bunch of feminist-friendly gifts that will inspire and instill confidence in the teen girls that you're giving presents to this holiday season.

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Katie Presley on December 3, 2010 - 2:16pm; tagged Blog Roundup, feminist blogosphere.
It's Friday, which means our radar is beeping! Here's what we've been reading in our post-Thanksgiving-feast torpor.
  • We're pretty excited that someone noticed how tired Sex and the City comparisons are when writing about "the modern woman." We're not so excited that the New York Times has missed that memo.
  • World AIDS Day was December 1st, and we're pretty sure these celebrities have their hearts in the right place with the "Buy Life' campaign, but really? "Sacrificed her/his digital life?" Huh.
  • Forbes (I know, right?!) has a blog post up contributing to the never-ending discussion over successful, educated women and their childbearing habits. And guess what? There's even a Sex and the City reference in there.
  • Remember how John McCain really, really doesn't want any gay Americans in the military? Well...he still doesn't.
  • Courtney at Feministing wrote about the "sister school" experience, and how stereotypes of women's colleges can turn deadly.
  • Taking a turn for the very weird, glam-metal-punk-glitter-rock band GWAR disemboweled a visage of Sarah Palin at a recent concert, and it even made Gawker uncomfortable.
  • Slate applies "stereotype threat" theory to girls in science, with interesting (if a little generalizing) results.
  • The Daily Beast wrote about parental involvement in bullying, and Slate was underwhelmed.

What have you been reading/watching/hearing this week? Let us know in the comments section!

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Katie Presley on November 19, 2010 - 12:32pm; tagged Blog Roundup, feminist blogosphere.

It's Friday, which means you get to kick off your weekend with some of the links that had us atwitter* this week:

  • First, you probably read about Tina Fey being censored on PBS in her acceptance speech for the Mark Twain Award. If you didn't, here's the clip (skip to 12:30ish for the cut clip):

Watch the full episode. See more Mark Twain Prize.

  • Another video clip: The women of Reel Grrls have posted a vlog on celebrity weight loss and the media's obsession with it.
  • Terry Gross is a divisive figure here at Bitch HQ (She asks good questions! She asks terrible questions! Her voice! It's so soothing/irritating!), but it's pretty undeniable that she's been kicking ass and taking names on Fresh Air this week. We're all about the Jay-Z interview in particular, for his responses to the "Bitch/ho question" (thanks, Terry!) and the "Why do rappers grab their crotches?" question.
  • Privilege Denying Dude is a new tumblr that makes us laugh and cringe at the same time.
  • Speaking of which, Vag Magazine/Upright Citizens Brigade is on episode #5 of their six-show web series. Remember Misty of Chincoteague? No? Just me? Cool.

*In the social media AND antiquated, you know, speech-related sort of way.
