Bitch in a Box: Holiday Gift Guide, Budding Mycologist Edition!

Bitch HQ post by Jasmine.Silver on December 9, 2011 - 3:57pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, holiday gift guide, mushrooms, Mycology.
Cover of Mushrooms Demystified features a photo of two big shroomsYou may see them scoffing at the chanterelle selection in your local New Seasons. Last month, they flaked out on your lunch date because it was a perfect day for "hunting." The symptoms of a budding mycologist are clear and consuming; they can barely walk downtown without checking every patch of bark-chips for emerging fungi.

If you're shopping for a mushroom lover this holiday season, here are the essentials:

Bitch HQ post by Mac Pogue on December 9, 2011 - 12:18pm; tagged Gabriel Garcia Bernal, Malia Obama, marriage.
Let's face it, sometimes real life is just the moments between reading blogs.
  • "This is what sets Pariah apart from (white) singular-narrative LGBT films; it debunks the myth that life begins and ends between the point of self-acceptance, and a wedding." Spectra Speaks reviews Pariah at Racialicious.
  • Ashley Lauren at Feministe picks apart the troubling world of marriage tropes on television.
  • Ann Friedman wrote about the troubling media coverage of Malia Obama's height at GOOD.
  • Watching a movie with a young one? Here's five tips for discussing problematic portrayals of gender with a child.
  • A British psychological study argues that people can't discriminate between language used in pornography magazines and language used by sex offenders.
  • Feministing piece has a piece on the yes-it's-real douchebaggery of the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board's new victim-blaming ad campaign.
  • Indie hip hop artist Jean Grae stopped by at Aisha Tyler's Girl on Guy podcast this week, with hilarious results.
  • From the World Is Still Awesome Department: bienvenidos, feministas, experience the "beauty and magic" (real quote) of Feminist Gael García Bernal.

Bitch in a Box: Holiday Gift Guide, Kitchen Gadgets Edition!

Bitch HQ post by Bianca Butler on December 8, 2011 - 3:21pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, holiday gift guide.

a collection of colorful zesters

No matter how different everyone's holiday traditions and plans are, they tend to have one thing in common: food. Lots of food, and much of it homemade. As someone who loves to cook, even I'll admit that the excessive amount of it that the holidays require can be a drain on the culinary spirit. But nothing makes me more excited to start looking up recipes than new gadgets to cook with. Read on for ideas to re-inspire your favorite chef after the holiday season!

Sebelius Overrules FDA: Plan B Won't Be Sold Over the Counter

Bitch HQ post by Kelsey Wallace on December 7, 2011 - 2:49pm; tagged plan b, reproductive justice.
By now you've probably heard the bad news:
In what can only be called an astounding move by an Administration that pledged on inauguration day that medical and health decisions would be based on fact not ideology and for which women are a major constituency, today Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) overruled a much-awaited decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make emergency contraception (EC) available over-the-counter (OTC) to women of all ages.

Bitch in a Box: Holiday Gift Guide, Jet-Set Sex Edition!

Bitch HQ post by y.tallonhicks on December 6, 2011 - 2:37pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, holiday gift guide, sex toys.
Pink Lelo vibe in a purse. It looks like a tube of lipstickHolidays are a time of giving, food, and family. And travel. And stress. Some of us are going to want to relieve some of that stress. And those of us who do don't need to be reminded by a certain airline-employed stranger to "Get your freak on, girl" upon arriving at our destination. While we fully encourage flying your "freak" flag often and proudly, between full-body pat downs and X-ray scanners, some may feel that security fondles our goodies enough. Though traveling with sex toys is common—not to mention perfectly legal—certain toys, like the two-pound, foot-long, stainless steel Njoy Eleven dildo will, unfortunately, need to be checked. Gifting for a jet-setting, carry-on-only type of sexual human being? Here's what to give them.

Bitch in a Box: Holiday Gift Guide, Tea Drinker's Edition!

Bitch HQ post by Jyoti Roy on December 5, 2011 - 1:54pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, holiday gift guide, tea.
Mr Tea tea set--a tea pot and cup with a painting of Mr T on the sideAs an avid tea drinker I can tell you that if you just went down to the grocery store and bought me a box of tea (any tea!) as a gift then I would be perfectly happy; a tea drinker can never have too much tea. Along with never having too much tea, an avid tea drinker can never have too many teapots or cups. You also don’t have to spend a fortune: go down to your local Goodwill and you will find an array of interesting teapots, sugar and creamer sets, and cup and saucer combos. One thing I like to do for the tea drinkers in my life is to buy a nice cup and saucer set from Goodwill, fill it with some candy or tea cookies, wrap it in cellophane, and finish it with a bow. You’ll get a fancy looking gift for under $10.

Bitch in a Box: Holiday Gift Guide, Calendars Edition!

Bitch HQ post by Ashley McAllister on December 2, 2011 - 12:41pm; tagged Bitch in a Box, calendars, holiday gift guide.
A second drawing from the calendar shows two piglets sitting down on a grassy patch surrounded by roses. The upper right corner of the calendar says June in cursive handwriting. There are lots of little pen-tip sized polka-dots covering the background of the image. This image is also a blend of purples and whites. There are few things nicer than waking up on the first day of the month to flip the page on the wall calendar (you did that yesterday morning, right?), especially when it's a beautiful calendar that was picked out for you by a dear friend. Selecting the right calendar for a friend or family member is a very important decision, as your calendar recipient will be looking at that thing all year long. If you're unsure of where to go to find the perfect calendar you're in luck, 'cause I've rounded up several rad calendars to please all of the rad people you might be giving gifts to this year.

On Our Radar

Bitch HQ post by Mac Pogue on December 2, 2011 - 12:37pm; tagged Occupy Wall Street, teen motherhood, trans activism.
It's that time of the week!
  • Mecca Jamilah Sullivan writes about the media's tragic de-queering of a Harlem youth basketball star.
  • Attention activists: The Sylvia Rivera Law Project recently released a guide for trans activists, and those who support trans activists, for staying safe in direct action protests (thanks, @kulandaybarrett!)
  • At Ain't This Livin, s.e. smith talks about the responsibility of pop culture analysis and the argument that pop culture is "just entertainment."
  • Nadra Kareem Little talks about the mainstream media's lack of coverage on race and the imbalance of representation in the Occupy movement for the East Bay Express.
  • Lauren Bruce, Feministe founder, talks teen motherhood, motherhood as a feminist issue and blogging at Pushback.org.
  • Collier Meyerson moves past the forehead-slap responses to Cat Marnell's awful Plan B post and looks at the racial and class implications of her screed.
  • Jos at Feministing saw the news about the trans health win and talks about how "it's about time" to see trans inclusion.
  • Reninaj J at the Crunk Feminist Collective questions the connections between rap and activism, in response to Jay Z's "Occupy All Streets" shirt.

Elisha Lim's SISSY Illustrated Calendar Now for Sale at BitchMart!

Bitch HQ post by Ashley McAllister on December 1, 2011 - 11:12am; tagged BitchMart.
Bitch is happy to announce that we are now selling Elisha Lim's brand-new illustrated calendar at BitchMart!

One of the pages from the SISSY calendar. The top of the page says sze-yang in in turquoise block handwriting. Underneath, there are a couple paragraphs of handwriting, but this image is too small to make out what the writing says. A person is displayed on the left of the writing, wearing a floral leotard, with dangly earings and turqouise eyeshadow. They are standing up with one hand behind their head and another one being held above their head, wrist bent and fingers pointed out.
