The Kill Rock Stars show was great! The floor was full from noon o'clock on, when Portland locals Explode into Colors hit the stage. This three piece trio wowed the crowd outside their Pacific Northwest with Klaudia's vocals and the awesome drumming from Lisa and Heather. The Paper Chase, Horsefeathers, Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down, Marnie Stern, and the Thermals followed!
I originally heard German electronic strongwoman, Ellen Allien in 2003 when her first full length album, Berlinette,
arrived on the scene. Her stop/start beats and the warmth of her spoken
words on top ('Need a planet without cars and wars—no wars—no cars—no
wars—no cars. I wish it could be true...) got me right away. Well, she
hasn't stopped since (and really she'd be going on for quite a while
before that). Her newer works are perhaps less accessible—exploring
sound scapes rather than dance beats, but you can always get your fill
of BPMs with Allien's DJ sets.
It's Friday, and you know what that means: Time for another edition of BitchTapes! Because Spring (crush season) is upon us, I figured I'd put together a mix of songs you can send to your crush(es). In the "Kelsey's Got A Crush on You" mix you'll find a song for almost every crush occasion and gender/orientation combination.
There's a song for a new crush, an old crush, an unwanted crush, a closeted gay crush, and even a crush who doesn't know you exist. Read about each track after the jump, and feel free to appropriate this mix for your own crushworthy purposes. (Make suggestions about additional crush songs, too!) By the end of the weekend, we'll all have our crushes eating out of the palms of our hands.
Dark Was The Night is the 20th compilation album released to benefit the Red Hot Organization - an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS. The organization has raised close to 7 million dollars for AIDS relief around the world, due in part to the contributions and participation of some amazing musical artists as displayed in this latest release.

I know that I posted a get-ready-for-tomorrow's-Douchebag-Decree-by-reading-about-another-douchebag piece last week, but this week finds me with yet another d-bag on the brain (or rather, the YouTube channel). Enter Asher Roth and his music video "I Love College."
Although this video is full of weird college/frat/gender stereotypes and cheesy lyrics about partying, for some reason I can't stop watching it. (It might be the uber-collegiate sample of Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" that plays throughout.) Is this video a postmodern parody of a hypermasculine, idealized version of the college experience? Or is Asher Roth just another creeper who is one beer-pong championship away from sexually assaulting someone? And either way, why is it so weirdly compelling? Watch the video and make the call, after the jump!
Tracy + The Plastics is a one-woman performance art music project that spanned from 1999 to 2006. Its sole driving force, Wynne Greenwood, dreamt up the premise for the project from a murder mystery movie she was writing, and it morphed into a seven year exploration of feminist, queer and political issues using low budget video and simple yet pulsing electronica. Read (and listen! and watch!) more after the jump..
When Bitch released our Loud issue way back in September, our Pop Culture Debate Club at our local feminist bookstore and community center (slash last-standing feminist non-profit outpost!) In Other Words had chips and salsa, small dogs, and no lack of heated debate....over who was the greatest female rocker OF ALL TIME.
While no one can say Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders isn't a total bad-ass, an unlikely argument was made for one Mariah Carey as the ultimate lady rocker and would you believe me if I said I wasn't just a little convinced? Chelsea Morrisey made the claim, and is on her way to rockstardom herself as a founding member and frontwoman of the emerging Portland band Dirty Mittens, who I had the chance to see the other night! MP3s and more after the jump!
