Mad Men Season 6 Recap: The Quality of Mercy

TV post by Andi Zeisler on June 17, 2013 - 11:42am; tagged Mad Men, recaps.

Don and Roger sit tensely on Ted's office couch

Welcome back to the second-to-last week of Mad Men Season 6 recaps! We already miss you, and damn if things aren't getting really interesting, too. This week, Annalee and Kelsey are both unable to report from their television sets, so I'm flying solo on a recap of this especially meaty episode. Read on for thoughts on ulterior motives, boarding-school drama, and the question of whether this show needs another Don Draper now that the first one seems to spend a lot of his time in the fetal position, listening to the Monkees.

On Our Radar: Today's Feminist News Roundup

News post by Sarah Mirk on June 17, 2013 - 7:44am; tagged abortion, rape, the bling ring, voting rights act.

It's Monday! I'm kicking off the week with this round-up of feminist news from around the internets.

• Reflections on Father's Day: Remembering a distant father who left his daughter's life and creating a new definition of what it means to be an "engaged father." [Crunk Feminist Collective and Colorlines]

• Where is homosexuality most accepted? A new map of global attitudes toward LGBT folks reveals that Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Canada are most supportive of homosexuality. [Sociological Images]

• Here's another map for Monday: There are more waiting periods for abortions than waiting periods for guns in the US. [Feministing]

A map of waiting periods for guns vs abortion

• What would a feminist labor movement look like? Writer Sarah Jaffe hosts a discussion for Dissent magazine. [Dissent]

• Today in rape culture: A suburban Chicago fireman is accused of trying to rape an incapacitated woman at a party, his defense is she was "making eyes" at him. Plus, college serial rapists are evading prosecution. [Shakesville and Bloomberg]

• Suspicious confirmed: Auto shops do tend to overcharge women. [Atlantic]

• The immigrant you won't see in The Bling Ring: In real life, one of the members of the "bling ring" of teens that stole from Hollywood celebrities' homes was undocumented immigrant Diana Tamayo, but in the new Sophia Coppola movie, she's cast as a white citizen. [Colorlines]

• There's a new live-action Little Mermaid movie in the works, but the same director as the recent Anna Karenina. [The Mary Sue]

• Paralympian Ryan Chalmers starts every day at 5:30am—he's becoming the first person to cross the US by wheelchair. [Guardian]

• Since her insurance doesn't cover gender confirmation surgery, one transgender New Yorker—24-year-old Diana Tourjee—is running an Indiegogo fundraiser for the costs. [Indiegogo]

What did I miss? Add what you're reading to the comments.

Ms. Opinionated: My Friend's "Personal Brand" Is An Ableist Slur

Ms. Opinionated post by Megan Carpentier on June 14, 2013 - 2:58pm; tagged ableism, advice, disability rights, ms opinionated, person with disabilities, privilege.

Welcome to the latest installment of Ms. Opinionated, in which readers have questions about the pesky day-to-day choices we all face, and I give advice about how to make ones that (hopefully) best reflect our shared commitment to feminist values—as well as advice on what to do when they don't.

Dear Ms. Opinionated,

Some time ago (within the last year), when one of my dear friends registered a social media account under a handle that involved an ableist slur ("t*rd" to be more specific), I felt uncomfortable but didn't bring it up. What I didn't realize was that this is a handle she's taking on as she pursues a career in the gaming industry, and since then she's registered a few internet accounts under this name (some promotional social media accounts and a blog, as well as accounts on websites relevant to her industry).

For Transgender Folks, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Still Exists.

Politics post by Sophia Seawell on June 14, 2013 - 11:32am; tagged don't ask don't tell, military, trans identity, trans inclusion, transgender.

On the left, a photo of Chris Beck as a male navy seal. On the right, a photo of Kris Beck as a female veteran.

Navy Seal Kris Beck deployed 13 times during her more than 20 years in service and earned both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. However, if she tried to join the military today, Beck would be swiftly rejected. Beck is transgender—and the military has made it clear that though gay and lesbian Americans can now join the military, transgender folks are still not welcome.

Pay Attention to These Women-Hosted Comedy Podcasts

Women Aren't Funny post by Gabrielle Moss on June 14, 2013 - 10:21am; tagged podcasts, women in comedy.

Comedian Cameron Esposito, on stage with a side mullet haircut

If you’d told me ten years ago, “I have a really great mp3 for you—it’s a recording of two people you don’t know discussing their lives,” I would have been very confused, and then probably would have told you to go to hell. But that was then, and this now.

On Our Radar: Today's Feminist News Roundup

Bitch HQ post by Andi Zeisler on June 14, 2013 - 8:52am; tagged brains, CIA, erotica, Game of Thrones, Microsoft, rape, Sofia Coppola.

Good morning and happy Friday! Here's all the feminist news on our radar today...

• This week, Avril Danica Haines was tapped to be deupty director of the CIA. Naturally, the Daily Beast took that as a cue to point out that Haines used to own a Baltimore bookstore that hosted weekly erotica readings. You know, since women should be ashamed of anything tying them to having a human sex drive. Way to crack that story wide open, assholes. [The Daily Beast]

• Microsoft responded to the rape joke made earlier this week during the company's Killer Instinct Xbox press demonstration at the E3 conference, saying "We remain committed to make gaming fun for everyone, and in that effort, we must lead by example.” [The Mary Sue]

• Maine Republican Ken Fredette took to the state's House floor Wednesday to oppose accepting federal funds to expand Medicaid coverage, invoking the classic sexist text Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus to buttress his claim that his "man's brain" can tell when free stuff isn't really free. You know, as opposed to female brains, which are full of lipstick and shoes and stuff.  [ThinkProgress]

• Why the last scene of the Game of Thrones season finale—you know, where Daenerys gets to play White Savior, complete with exalted crowd-surfing—was simply a continuation of a problematic characterization. [io9]

• As Sofia Coppola's new film The Bling Ring opens in selected cities this weekend, Indiewire takes note of the sexism that pervades its early reviews. [Indiewire]

• Like some of you, probably, BuzzFeed's Justine Sharrock wondered about the people who create Tumblrs devoted to chronicling their self-harm and advising others on self-harm. Here's her interview with one of them. (Obviously, trigger warning for cutting and other self-harming) [BuzzFeed]

• Are wedding presents a scourge of American culture? Yes indeedy, says Matthew Yglesias. (So if you're planning to stiff your friends at their weddings this summer, pin it on him.) [Slate]

• What happens when colleges and universities handle rape as an administrative matter, rather than a criminal one? Well, for starters, serial offenders are welcomed back on campus to rape again. [Bloomberg]

Veronica Franco, History's Favorite Renaissance Prostitute Poet

History post by Mary Creighton on June 13, 2013 - 3:21pm; tagged Adventures in Feministory, poetry, prostitution, Veronica Franco.

Adventures in Feministory Logo

In a time when prostitution and female education were both considered unwholesome, professional courtesan Veronica Franco established herself a leader in the 16th Century literary arts. Although initially known among the Venetian literati for her iconic beauty and razor-sharp wit, Franco busted through the Venetian glass ceiling with her success in erotic love poems.

Popaganda Episode: Scouts

Feminist Podcast post by Sarah Mirk on June 13, 2013 - 10:46am; tagged Boy Scouts, girl scouts, LGBT.

quote: the best scout in camp was a 10-year-old girl

Five million American kids are members of Girl Scouts of the USA and Boy Scouts of America. As the Boy Scouts of America’s homophobia has become a national issue, we ask: is scouting still relevant? How can scouting be more inclusive? We talk with two young girl scouts, whip-smart troop leader and foreign affairs expert Alisha Bhagat, take a hike with Portland's alternative scouting troop, and discuss "artisinal manliness."

All in just 30 minutes! Listen in!
